Canes and Crutches - Policy Article

Canes and crutches are covered under the DME benefit when they meet Medicare statutory requirements and the LCD's reasonable and necessary criteria. For specified HCPCS codes, Final Rule 1713 requires a face-to-face encounter and a Written Order Prior to Delivery (WOPD) or claims will be denied; white canes for blind persons are noncovered (bill with A9270), and E1399 must not be used for any cane or crutch.
