Heating Pads and Heat Lamps - Policy Article

Electric (E0210), moist (E0215), and water-circulating (E0217) heating pads and durable replacement pads (E0249) are covered under the DME benefit when they meet LCD reasonable-and-necessary requirements, specific HCPCS coding definitions, and applicable statutory payment rules. Specified items subject to Final Rule 1713 require a face-to-face encounter and a Written Order Prior to Delivery (WOPD) obtained before delivery; nonelectric heating pads (A9273) and hydrocollator units (E0225/E0239) are noncovered. Devices must meet technical code criteria and OSHA NRTL certification, and suppliers should follow LCD documentation and PDAC coding guidance.
