Seat Lift Mechanisms - Policy Article

Seat lift mechanisms (HCPCS E0627 electric, E0629 manual) are covered under the DME benefit when they meet the reasonable and necessary criteria in the related Local Coverage Determination and all Medicare requirements; mechanisms incorporated into a chair can be billed as the mechanism plus A9270 for the chair. Toilet-mounted toilet seat lift mechanisms (HCPCS E0172) are non-covered. Specified seat-lift items are subject to Final Rule 1713 requiring a face-to-face encounter and a Written Order Prior to Delivery (WOPD), CMN rules changed effective 2023-01-01, and proper use of modifiers KX/GA/GZ with retained documentation is required.
