Home Health Skilled Nursing Care: Teaching and Training for Dementia Patients with Behavioral Disturbances - Medical Policy Article
A52845
Medicare covers home health skilled nursing teaching and training for beneficiaries with dementia and behavioral disturbances when provided as part of a beneficiary-centered care plan to teach caregivers how to manage behaviors and when such interventions are reasonable and necessary to address impairments or activity limitations. Coverage requires documented, specific characterization of the behaviors, caregiver ability and environmental considerations (WHO ICF recommended), and services stop being covered once it becomes apparent after a reasonable period that caregiver training is not possible or further teaching is no longer reasonable and necessary.
