Billing and Coding: Pre/Postoperative Care: Date of Service

When care is transferred during the global surgery period, submit the surgeon's claim with modifier 54 and the postoperative clinician's claim with modifier 55; both claims must use the same date of service and identical surgical procedure code. Claims that have mismatched dates, mismatched procedure codes, or lack the appropriate modifier will be monitored and may be rejected; providers should document the agreed transfer and follow CMS Pub 100-04 Chapter 12 guidance.
