Billing and Coding: Radiology Services: Multiple, Identical Services on Same Day

Multiple identical radiology services on the same day must be billed on the same claim using the days/units field, include service times, and use CPT modifier 76 when performed multiple times by the same physician. The first X-ray interpretation (especially in the ER) is generally reimbursed; a second interpretation by a different physician may be reimbursed only when billed with modifier 77 and accompanied by written documentation demonstrating medical reasonableness and necessity; otherwise duplicate interpretations may be denied.
