Billing and Coding: Arthroscopic Lavage and Arthroscopic Debridement for Osteoarthritic Knees

NCD 150.9 denies coverage of arthroscopic lavage alone and arthroscopic debridement (including debridement plus lavage) for osteoarthritic knees presenting with pain-only or severe osteoarthritis. Arthroscopic lavage and drainage for knee infection (septic arthritis) is covered and corresponds to CPT 29871; all other indications are left to Medicare contractor discretion.
