A54978
Medicare covers the basic lipid panel (cholesterol, lipids, triglycerides) as a preventive cardiovascular screening every 5 years when ordered by a physician and under NCD 190.23 for evaluation or monitoring of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and lipid therapy. Non-lipid cardiovascular risk biomarker panels and non-lipid biomarkers (biochemical, hematologic, immunologic, genetic) for CV risk assessment are denied. Selected individual lipid biomarkers (hs-CRP, Lp(a), Lp-PLA2, LDL particles, Apo B) may be covered only when specifically ordered and the clinical reason is documented to guide diagnosis or therapy.
