Policy Summary
Physical therapists with ABPTS certification may perform the EMG/nerve conduction CPT codes assigned supervision levels 21, 22, 6A, 66, 77 or 77A (and, where state law permits, the technical component of needle EMG codes 95860–95872 and 95885–95887); PTs who lacked certification but were furnishing these tests before May 1, 2001 may continue, while nerve conduction code 95905 is not allowed for PTs. Payment and supervision follow the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule/MPFSDB designations (TC of 95937 changed to 7A effective 1/1/2013), and E/M services are usually considered included in the exam.
