Skilled Therapy Services in the SNF PPS Setting

Medicare-covered skilled therapy minutes in the SNF PPS setting are limited to time that requires the skills of a qualified therapist and that is reasonable and necessary in amount, frequency, and duration. Only the portions of modalities requiring skilled tasks (e.g., electrode placement, device setup, skin checks) should be recorded as skilled time unless specific, well-documented clinical reasons and chart support justify constant supervision or 1:1 attendance for the entire modality.

"Therapy minutes may be recorded on the MDS only for treatment time that requires the skills of a qualified licensed therapist or therapist assistant under supervision."
