Billing and Coding: Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA)

Medicare covers MRA for specific indications including internal carotid vessels, peripheral lower extremity arteries, pre‑operative evaluation for elective AAA repair, imaging of renal and aortoiliac arteries when MRA is expected to avoid CA and affect management, chest MRA for PE when iodinated contrast is contraindicated, and evaluation of thoracic aortic dissection/aneurysm. Coverage requires use of FDA‑premarket‑approved MRA units operated within approved parameters, documentation of medical necessity (history, exam, and relevant test results), valid ICD‑10 coding, and adherence to coding edits; all other uses are non‑covered unless specifically indicated.
