Billing and Coding: Non-Invasive Abdominal / Visceral Vascular Studies
A57591
Medicare covers non‑invasive abdominal/visceral vascular studies when the results are used to inform clinical management, including one preoperative scan for bypass surgery and medically necessary follow‑up after angioplasty as dictated by the treated vascular distribution. Routine outpatient studies are generally limited to once per year (inpatient and ER services are excluded from this limit), preventive/screening studies are not covered absent statute, and strict documentation (clinical indication, medical necessity, full reports, image retention, and sharing of results) is required to support coverage.
"Non‑invasive abdominal/visceral vascular studies are covered when the test results will be used to directly inform or change the patient's clinical management."
