Policy Summary
Coverage for somatosensory testing is allowed when services are medically reasonable and necessary and fully documented in the medical record. Tests and interpretations must be performed or supervised by appropriately trained personnel (e.g., ABPTS-certified PTs for certain technical components) and documentation including hard-copy results, SEP specifics (nerves tested, latencies, normal/abnormal evaluation), and provider training must be available for audit; NPs, CNSs, and PAs may not act as supervisory physicians but may personally perform tests per state law.
