This billing and coding article clarifies that Colon Capsule Endoscopy (CCE) may be coded when optical colonoscopy is contraindicated (use ICD-10-CM Z53.09) or when instrument colonoscopy was attempted but incomplete (use Z53.8). Medical records must be legible, include patient identification and the responsible provider's signature, support the selected ICD-10-CM code(s), and the CPT/HCPCS billed must describe the service; non-covered services must not be billed as covered and require an appropriate modifier.
