Billing and Coding: Independent Diagnostic Testing Facilities (IDTF)

Medicare will reimburse diagnostic procedures and associated commonly separately reimbursed supplies performed in an IDTF only when the IDTF is credentialed and approved by Palmetto GBA to bill those specific CPT/HCPCS codes and when supervising, interpreting physicians and technicians meet the policy’s licensure, Medicare enrollment, non-exclusion, and proficiency requirements. Coverage remains subject to Medicare medical necessity, NCDs/LCDs, and other statutory exclusions; deleted codes may be billed up to one year after the procedure date and supervising physicians may provide general supervision to no more than three IDTF sites.
