Billing and Coding: Tetanus Immunization

Medicare covers tetanus immunization when administered for an injury or direct exposure to tetanus (wound management/exposure prophylaxis); routine preventative tetanus vaccination is not covered. Providers must append the GY modifier when they know a service is non-covered, and must maintain legible medical records that support the selected ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPCS codes, include patient identifiers, dates of service, and the responsible provider's signature.
