Aural Rehabilitation
AETNA-CPB-0034
Aetna covers aural rehabilitation (including auditory verbal therapy) as speech therapy for hearing-impaired members and specifically for post‑cochlear implant auditory rehabilitation (CPT 92626, 92627, 92630, 92633 and related cochlear device codes) for the listed ICD‑10 diagnoses, but coverage is contingent on meeting the plan’s selection criteria. Aetna excludes rehab for cochlear implant users who have reached a performance plateau and considers aural rehabilitation experimental/investigational (not covered) for individuals without cochlear implants and for treatment of tinnitus (ICD‑10 tinnitus codes H93.11‑H93.19, H93.A1‑H93.A9).
"Aetna considers aural rehabilitation (including auditory verbal therapy [AVT]) medically necessary as speech therapy for members with hearing impairments and after placement of a cochlear implant."
