Open Air, Low Field Strength, and Positional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Units

Aetna covers MRI for appropriate indications regardless of field strength or configuration, accepting intermediate/low‑field and open/stand‑up units as alternatives and covering the policy’s listed CPT codes and HCPCS S8042 only when selection criteria are met. Repeat MRIs performed in different positions or with/without weight‑bearing are considered experimental/investigational and not covered (including for Ehlers‑Danlos and suspected craniovertebral/cervical abnormalities), repeat cervical spine scans (CPTs 72141, 72142, 72156) are not covered, and ICD‑10 codes M48.02, M50.00–M50.03, and M50.10–M50.13 are specifically excluded.
