Policy Summary
Aetna considers manual or electroacupuncture medically necessary for chronic (≥12 weeks) neck pain, chronic (≥12 weeks) headache, low back pain, nausea of pregnancy, and as adjunctive therapy for knee or hip osteoarthritis, while numerous other indications are deemed experimental/investigational and not covered. Maintenance treatment without symptom improvement is not covered; therapy must be reevaluated after four weeks and discontinued if the member does not demonstrate meaningful clinical benefit.
