Neuropsychological and Psychological Testing

Aetna covers neuropsychological and psychological testing when medically necessary to assess or monitor cognitive impairment, aid differential diagnosis (including complicated ADHD), guide treatment/rehabilitation, or resolve unclear psychiatric diagnoses, but excludes testing for pre‑surgical clearance, NPT for chronic fatigue syndrome or migraines, neurodiversity assessments, testing during active substance abuse/withdrawal, and many computerized assessment devices (considered experimental). Key requirements: testing must be limited to the reasonable number of hours/units and use validated, age‑/population‑appropriate, nonredundant, up‑to‑date instruments with demonstrated reliability, validity and standardized normative data.
