Policy Summary
Aquatic therapy (CPT 97036, 97113) is medically necessary for musculoskeletal conditions to restore function lost or reduced by a specific injury/illness, when the member cannot effectively perform land‑based exercises or when it facilitates progress to land‑based therapy. Maintenance therapy (no improvement) and all non‑musculoskeletal uses — including WATSU, crenobalneotherapy, and nano‑bubble hydrotherapy — are considered not medically necessary or experimental/investigational and are not covered.
