Work Hardening Programs

Aetna excludes coverage for work hardening and related vocational/return-to-work programs (including CPT 97537, 97545, 97546 and HCPCS S9117) because they are considered vocational training, not treatment of illness or injury. Coverage is limited to services that are treatment of an illness or injury per the member’s benefit plan, so medical-necessity and specific plan provisions must be met for any therapeutic services to be covered.
