Ultrasound for Pregnancy
AETNA-CPB-0199
Aetna covers a detailed fetal anatomic ultrasound to evaluate amniotic band syndrome, single umbilical artery, soft sonographic markers of aneuploidy (absent/hypoplastic nasal bone; choroid plexus cyst; echogenic bowel; echogenic intracardiac focus; fetal pyelectasis; nuchal translucency ≥3.0 mm; shortened femur/humerus), known or suspected fetal anatomic abnormalities, or abnormal serum aneuploidy screening. Ultrasound solely to determine fetal sex or for keepsake images is not medically necessary, and more than one detailed anatomic ultrasound per pregnancy per practice — as well as use for hypo-/hyper‑coiled cord, McCune‑Albright syndrome, or placental cord insertion — is considered experimental/investigational.
