Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS)
AETNA-CPB-0202
Aetna covers magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) for assessing prognosis in hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy; differentiating low- versus high-grade gliomas; evaluating an indeterminate brain lesion when the MRS result will be used to determine whether biopsy/resection can be safely postponed; distinguishing recurrent tumor from radiation necrosis; and diagnosing/monitoring metabolic disorders such as Canavan disease. MRS is considered experimental/investigational (not covered) for all other indications—e.g., breast cancer, cerebrovascular disease, dementia and movement disorders, dermatomyositis—due to insufficient evidence.
