Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Treatments
AETNA-CPB-0213
Aetna covers Stretta radiofrequency therapy for non‑erosive and symptomatic GERD (including PPI‑dependent/refractory or medically refractory patients) in selected uncomplicated cases to improve symptoms, quality of life and reduce PPI use, and also recognizes transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) and endoscopic full‑thickness plication as endoscopic treatment options (the latter for patients requiring maintenance PPI therapy). The Angelchik prosthesis, anti‑reflux mucosal interventions (band ligation/mucosectomy/ablation), Bard EndoCinch and Apollo OverStitch suturing systems, C‑BLART and similar approaches are excluded as experimental/investigational because effectiveness has not been established.
"Patients with GERD with moderate-to-severe regurgitation, especially despite once-daily PPI treatment, should be considered for minimally invasive treatment with MSA rather than increased PPI therapy."
