Policy Summary
Aetna covers injections of FDA‑cleared bulking agents for unilateral vocal cord paralysis, medialization (type I) thyroplasty (Gore‑Tex/silastic implant considered medically necessary), steroid injection after microsurgical vocal fold lesion removal for postop inflammation/scar reduction, and Radiesse for permanent vocal cord paralysis/insufficiency. Injections of bulking agents for other indications, botulinum toxin, Juvederm, and Radiesse or Deflux for velopharyngeal/velopalatal insufficiency are considered experimental/investigational and not covered.
