Magnetic Source Imaging/Magnetoencephalography

Aetna covers MSI/MEG only for pre‑surgical localization in patients with intractable focal epilepsy when other localization techniques are discordant or questions remain (CPT 95965–95967, S8035 and specified intractable epilepsy ICD‑10 codes covered if selection criteria are met). MSI/MEG is not covered as a stand‑alone or first‑line test after routine EEG and is considered experimental/investigational for numerous other indications (e.g., psychiatric, neurodegenerative, developmental, pain, tumor evaluations) and should be used as part of a comprehensive pre‑surgical evaluation at specialized epilepsy centers.
