Cryoanalgesia and Therapeutic Cold

Aetna covers cryoanalgesia for temporary relief of chronic refractory trigeminal neuralgia (only when selection criteria in the policy Appendix are met), pre/intra/post‑operative cryoanalgesia for pain management after Nuss and Ravitch pectus repairs, and passive cold compression units as DME and passive hot/cold therapy as medically necessary. Active cold/compression systems, portable refrigerated units, combined hot/cold devices, and cryoanalgesia for post‑thoracotomy or post‑tonsillectomy are considered experimental/investigational and not covered (active units are excluded even if prescribed solely for compression).
