Videostroboscopy
AETNA-CPB-0305
Aetna covers videostroboscopy (CPT 31579) as medically necessary for detection of vocal cord pathology (e.g., polyps, invasive carcinoma, paresis/paralysis) only when both mirror‑image and endoscopic laryngoscopic exams were performed and found no abnormality despite persistent symptoms and when the listed ICD‑10 diagnoses apply. It is considered experimental/investigational (not covered) for all other indications and is contraindicated for aphonic patients, those unable to sustain phonation for 2–3 seconds, or with markedly breathy voice/incomplete glottic closure.
"Covered ICD-10 diagnosis: D02."
