Bone Growth Stimulators
AETNA-CPB-0343
Ultrasonic osteogenesis stimulators as DME are covered to accelerate healing of fresh closed or grade I open short oblique/short spiral tibial diaphyseal fractures (when treated with closed reduction and cast immobilization) and for fresh fractures, fusions, or delayed unions of the scaphoid, 5th metatarsal (Jones fracture), and distal radius (Colles fracture; distal radius requires closed reduction and cast immobilization). They are excluded/considered experimental or investigational for axial‑skeleton fractures, failed fusions or nonunions of the skull or vertebrae, lumbar compression, stress or avulsion hip fractures, avascular necrosis of the femoral head, calcaneal apophysitis, Charcot arthropathy, and are not established for fractures with >50% post‑reduction displacement.
"Medicare allows ultrasonic osteogenesis stimulators only if all of the following criteria are met: nonunion of a fracture documented by a minimum of two sets of radiographs obtained prior to starti..."
