Aetna covers extracorporeal immunoadsorption (Prosorba Column) only for: HUS or ITP with clinical evidence of serious bleeding and platelet count <50,000 (or potential for serious bleeding with platelets <20,000); life‑threatening SLE as a last‑resort after conventional therapies have failed/intolerable/contraindicated; moderate‑to‑severe RA after failure of NSAIDs, methotrexate and other DMARDs; and myasthenic crisis after failure of IVIG or plasma exchange. All other indications are considered experimental/investigational and not covered (examples: allergic asthma, atopic dermatitis, antiphospholipid syndrome, dermatomyositis).
