Aetna covers a high‑intensity light‑box as medically necessary DME for seasonal affective disorder in members diagnosed with bipolar disorder or recurrent major depression who meet DSM‑V seasonal‑pattern criteria (≥2 years of seasonal depressive episodes that fully remit in spring and substantially outnumber non‑seasonal episodes). Light‑box therapy is considered experimental/investigational and not covered for anorexia nervosa, childhood sleep disorders, cystic fibrosis, non‑seasonal depression, or Parkinson disease.
