Ethanol Injection for Thyroid Lesions and Other Selected Indications

Aetna covers ethanol injection sclerotherapy for thyroglossal duct cysts only if the lesion is monocystic, cystography shows no extravasation, and cytology is benign (repeat injection may be done ≥1 month for recurrence), and also covers treatment of symptomatic head/neck venous malformations and absolute ethanol for overt upper GI bleeding. Ethanol injection is considered experimental/investigational and not covered for endometrioma, percutaneous injection for thyroid cancer, and ultrasound-guided treatment of Warthin’s tumor (ICD‑10 C73, D11.0, N80.x not covered).
