Varicocele: Selected Treatments
AETNA-CPB-0413
Aetna covers percutaneous embolization (balloon or metallic coil) or surgical ligation — with microsurgical varicocelectomy an acceptable alternative — for adolescents with grade 2–3 varicoceles plus ipsilateral testicular growth retardation, men with infertility with decreased sperm motility and lower sperm concentrations, post‑surgical recurrence, or scrotal pain. These procedures are not covered unless those criteria are met, and addition of sclerosant to coil embolization, endoluminal occlusion devices (e.g., ArtVentive), endovenous laser ablation of the spermatic vein, and treatment of subclinical varicoceles are considered experimental/investigational and excluded.
"ICD-10 codes covered if selection criteria are met: E29."
