Aetna covers rental of reusable breast pumps (including hospital‑grade while a newborn is hospitalized) and rental for infants with congenital feeding disorders up to 12 months, and—under DHHS‑applicable plans (first plan year on/after Aug 1, 2012)—covers purchase of a manual or standard electric pump during pregnancy or anytime postpartum (including for adoptive mothers when criteria are met). Aetna excludes purchase of pumps under standard non‑DHHS plans, treats non‑reusable consumer pumps as not DME (not covered) under standard plans, and considers purchase of hospital‑grade or wearable battery‑operated pumps not medically necessary; rental is not covered once the newborn is discharged except for infants with congenital feeding disorders.
