Aetna covers established vitiligo treatments—excimer laser (e.g., XTRAC, EX‑308), narrow‑band UVB, PUVA, topical tacrolimus, and topical or systemic corticosteroids. Continued PUVA or NB‑UVB is not medically necessary after 6 months (about 8–10 treatments/month) unless there is significant follicular pigmentation, and Aetna deems numerous other interventions (various gene polymorphism tests, IL‑17 measurement, digital/3D image analysis, melanocyte transplantation/grafting, biologics/TNF‑alpha agents, apremilast, afamelanotide, prostaglandins, home phototherapy, many topical/systemic agents, etc.) experimental/investigational and not covered.
