Policy Summary
Aetna covers ECT for catatonia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder (unipolar), and certain acute exacerbations of schizophrenia, but deems multiple monitored ECT (MMECT), ultrabrief bilateral ECT (CPT 90870), and adjunctive ketamine with ECT experimental/investigational and not covered. Coverage requires patients be ≥12 years old; more than 20 ECT sessions in a treatment series is considered "rarely medically necessary" and any additional or prophylactic sessions must be justified.
