Aetna covers endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) for diagnosing common bile duct stones and for evaluation of biliary tree abnormalities, GI tract wall/adjacent structures, pancreatic disorders (masses, pseudocysts, chronic pancreatitis) and adenopathy/posterior mediastinal masses (when performed with fine‑needle aspiration). EUS for other indications (including EUS‑elastography, evaluation of asymptomatic CBD dilation, tumor staging if metastasis already demonstrated unless the result will affect therapy), EUS‑guided ablation/brachytherapy for pancreatic neoplasms, EchoTip Insight, and CPT elastography codes 76981–76983 are considered experimental/investigational and not covered.
