Aetna covers in utero fetal surgery for ablation of anastomotic vessels in acardiac twins, insertion of pleuro‑amniotic shunts for fetal pleural effusion, fetoscopic laser ablation/occlusion of anastomotic vessels for early, severe (stages II–IV) twin‑twin transfusion syndrome, removal of sacrococcygeal teratoma, and repair of myelomeningocele. Fetal aortic valvuloplasty, fetal tracheal occlusion for congenital diaphragmatic hernia, fetoscopic laser ablation for type 2 vasa previa, shunting for fetal cerebral ventriculomegaly, and treatment of amniotic band syndrome are considered experimental/investigational and not covered; TTTS laser ablation is limited to cases staged II–IV per the policy appendix.
