Aetna covers over‑the‑door cervical traction devices (HCPCS E0860) and select pneumatic cervical traction devices that apply force other than to the mandible and do not require an extra stand/frame (HCPCS E0849) as DME when the member has a musculoskeletal or neurologic impairment requiring traction, has been shown how to use and tolerated the device, and for pneumatic devices one of the following is documented: physician-justified need for ≥20 pounds, treated TMJ dysfunction, or jaw/neck anatomy precluding a chin halter. Cervical traction via headboard or non‑pneumatic free‑standing frame, the Posture Pump, devices for atlanto‑occipital dislocation, and inflatable‑air‑bladder collars are excluded/considered experimental or not medically necessary, and pneumatic devices are reserved for those who failed over‑the‑door traction.
