Aetna considers the Mantoux tuberculin skin test medically necessary as a preventive service per Advisory Council/CDC guidelines for persons suspected of active TB, close contacts of known/suspected TB cases, foreign‑born persons recently arrived (≤5 years) from high‑incidence countries, and health‑care workers serving high‑risk clients. Biomarker‑based non‑sputum tests, breath tests (eNose), molecular stool tests (e.g., stool Xpert MTB/RIF, TruTip), multiple‑puncture/tine skin tests, and whole‑genome sequencing for TB drug resistance are experimental/investigational and not covered.
