Aetna covers coblation tonsillectomy as medically necessary for peritonsillar abscess, recurrent middle ear infection when tonsillar hypertrophy is an exacerbating factor, recurrent/chronic tonsillar infection, and tonsillar hypertrophy causing respiratory symptoms or airway obstruction; nasal coblation plasma surgery (CPT 30801–30802) is covered only if selection criteria are met. Aetna considers cervical coblation nucleoplasty for cervicogenic headache, coblation adenoidectomy, coblation annuloplasty for cervical discogenic pain, coblation‑assisted arytenoidectomy in infants, and coblation‑assisted management of airway stenosis experimental/investigational and not covered.
