Fundus Photography
AETNA-CPB-0539
Aetna covers fundus photography as medically necessary for evaluation of abnormal EOG/infrared VOG, abnormal oculomotor or retinal function studies, abnormal visually evoked potentials, and age‑related macular degeneration, but considers imaging of a normal retina not medically necessary and deems automated color fundus photography for AMD detection, computer‑aided time‑series analysis (e.g., MatchedFlicker), and numerous other indications (including routine screening of asymptomatic persons and the listed clinical scenarios) experimental/investigational. Coverage is limited to no more than two fundus photography tests per year unless more frequent testing is documented and justified in the medical record.
