Voice Prosthesis for Voice Rehabilitation Following Total Laryngectomy

Indwelling TE voice prostheses (with replacement every 3–6 months), non‑indwelling prostheses, and hand‑held artificial larynx devices are covered for voice rehabilitation after total laryngectomy when recommended by a laryngologist or speech‑language pathologist (CPT 31611 covered if selection criteria are met). Pneumatic bionic voice prostheses and TE prosthesis insufflators are excluded as experimental, patients with poor manual dexterity are ineligible for TE prosthesis candidacy, and the policy lists ICD‑10 Z90.02 on its non‑covered list under the stated criteria.
