Aerosolized or Irrigated Anti-infectives for Sinusitis

Aetna considers nasally aerosolized or irrigated anti-infectives (topical antibiotics and antifungals) experimental and investigational and therefore not covered for the treatment of acute or chronic sinusitis because randomized trials and professional guidelines show inadequate or no clinical benefit. There are no clinical criteria under which these therapies are deemed medically necessary, and topical/systemic antifungals showed no benefit with higher adverse events.
