Aetna considers stereolithographic (3‑D) models, 3‑D printed cranial implants, and 3‑D printing of anatomic structures for preoperative planning—including use in plastic/reconstructive surgery and penile surface‑mold brachytherapy—experimental and investigational and does not cover them. These uses are excluded because their safety and effectiveness in improving outcomes have not been established.
