Safety Items
AETNA-CPB-0623
Aetna covers safety items only under non‑standard plans that do not exclude them when the member has a disease or medical condition that increases risk of injury or susceptibility — continuously worn prefabricated or custom soft or hard medical protective helmets are considered medically necessary (with annual replacement liners covered) for frequent/violent/uncontrolled seizures, balance disorders, head‑banging, or post‑cranial surgery, and items such as wall/floor‑affixed grab bars, hospital bedside rails, bed safety enclosure frames, and enclosed hospital‑grade pediatric cribs may be covered for persons with neurocognitive or physical disabilities. Most standard Aetna plans explicitly exclude safety items (listing many examples such as safety beds/systems, bed alarms, certain helmets, car seats, fall detection systems, grab bars, smoke/CO detectors, etc.), and devices normally useful absent illness or that merely provide a “safer surrounding” do not meet DME coverage.
