Aetna covers spinal/para-spinal ultrasound in newborns and infants only for detection of injury sequelae, evaluation of suspected congenital defects (e.g., tethered cord, diastematomyelia, hydromyelia, syringomyelia), guidance for lumbar puncture, assessment of lumbosacral stigmata associated with spinal dysraphism, and post‑operative evaluation for cord retethering. All other indications — including diagnostic evaluation of neuromusculoskeletal conditions, preoperative scoliosis curve-flexibility assessment, spinal epidural abscess management, use to assist neuraxial (epidural/subarachnoid) blocks or lumbar puncture in older patients, and SonixGPS — are considered experimental/investigational and not covered.
