Aetna covers wrist actigraphy/accelerometry for evaluation of sleep–wake patterns and management of sleep disorders—specifically for assessing sleep and wakefulness, insomnia, circadian rhythm sleep–wake disorders, screening for idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder, and monitoring restless legs syndrome. Actigraphy is considered experimental/investigational and not covered for other uses (e.g., defining lithium response in bipolar disorder, detection of seizures during sleep, diagnosis of hypertension) due to insufficient evidence.
