This policy covers bronchial thermoplasty (BT), an endobronchial procedure for adults with severe asthma intended to reduce exacerbations and emergency/hospital visits. BT is limited to adults with severe asthma uncontrolled despite optimal therapy (including those unsuitable for or who have failed biologic therapy) and should only be performed in specialist high‑volume centers by multidisciplinary teams and experienced interventional pulmonologists—generally within IRB‑approved clinical trials or registries and under strict governance—because long‑term safety and effectiveness are uncertain and the evidence base is low and controversial.
